PHOENIX, AZ, July 01, 2009 /Motorcycles PR News/ -- Spinal Cord Injury (CSI) is among the most severe and devastating injuries a person can suffer in a motorcycle accident. Spinal injuries can be severely debilitating to your quality of life because they can result in full or partial paralysis and can limit or destroy your ability to work and partake in recreational activities.
Motorcycle riders are at a much higher risk for spinal injuries than other motorists due to their limited protection. A motorcycle rider's spinal cord is protected from the pavement, vehicles, and other objects by only a shirt and possibly a jacket.
If you have suffered a spinal injury in a motorcycle accident in Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Mesa, you should speak with an Arizona motorcycle attorney as soon as possible. If the injury was someone else's fault, that responsible party could be responsible for your damages, including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Spinal injuries often involve expensive long-term care and may make it difficult or impossible for you to work, so it is of the utmost importance to ensure that you receive proper compensation.
About Spinal Cord Injury
The spinal cord is about 18 inches long and runs down the middle of the back from the base of the brain to the waist. The nerves within the spinal cord carry messages back and forth from the brain to the spinal nerves along the spinal tract. The spinal nerves, in turn, branch out and carry these messages to various parts of the body.
The spinal cord is surrounded by rings of bones called vertebra. These vertebra make up the spinal column. Spinal Cord Injury occurs when trauma damages the vertebra or the spinal cord, making it impossible for the brain to communicate with the parts of the body. Generally, the higher in the spinal column the trauma occurs, the more dysfunction a person will experience.
Motorcyclists are at risk for CSI when they are thrown from their bike during an accident. A motorcyclists' back may come in contact with the ground or pavement, with another vehicle, or with another object such as a building or freeway median. While motorcyclists have helmets and pads to protect other areas of the body, the spinal column is usually left relatively exposed, increasing the risk for CSI.
Types of Spinal Cord Injury
There are two general classifications for CSI:
Complete - A complete spinal cord injury results in permanent paralysis below the level of the injury. Currently, there is no curable treatment for complete spinal cord injuries, though physical therapy is used to improve the patient's quality of life.
Incomplete - In incomplete spinal cord injuries, the victim has some movement below the level of the injury. Victims of incomplete spinal cord injuries can frequently make partial or even full recoveries, though it typically requires a large amount of physical therapy.
