Labor Day weekend is approaching and, with it, the end of summer. Across the state in California, law enforcement is looking to close out summer with a heavy crackdown on drunk driving -- and they're not just talking about it.

Checkpoints have begun to pop up and "saturation patrols" will be watching the roads, searching for offenders. In some areas, such as San Mateo County, officers are making a strong push to enforce outstanding warrants -- tracking down those tagged as the "worst of the worst." Many of these individuals face lengthy license suspensions and/or heavy fines.

The DUI crackdown in California is part of a nationwide campaign, kicked off on August 19th by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). Through Labor Day weekend, thousands of police departments across the country will be scaling up efforts to prevent drunk-driving-related accidents and fatalities.

Many police departments, including some in California, aren't waiting for Labor Day and are already out and on the road.

In 2008, over Labor Day weekend, 40 percent of all fatal accidents in the United States involved a drunk driver. This, along with the fact that the number of female drivers arrested for driving drunk has grown by almost 30 percent since 1997, convinced USDOT that extra emphasis was necessary. The increase in female drunk drivers, especially, is a frightening statistic as many fear that these drivers may be riding with children.

Last year in California, 1,029 people lost their lives in crashes involving alcohol. Over Labor Day weekend alone, some 4,000 drivers were arrested on DUI charges. With increased oversight and a more definite sense of purpose, there will most certainly be more arrests this year.

Those charged with driving under the influence in California face anywhere from a four month to a multi-year license suspension, not to mention expenses. All in all, a driver can end up holding a bill for almost $7,000 including fines, penalties and attorney fees.

It's important to be aware of yourself this Labor Day and use discretion in determining whether or not you are able to drive. If you are arrested on drunk driving charges and face a lengthy license suspension or heavy fines, you may consider contacting an attorney who is well-versed in DUI defense.
