If you're used to rushing through red lights when you're in a hurry, or rolling through them as you make a right turn, you might have to get used to something else: traffic tickets arriving by mail. More and more Florida cities are putting red-light cameras at busy intersections to catch drivers going through red lights.

The cameras are triggered when a car goes through an intersection after the traffic light turns red or when a car rolls a red light through while making a right-hand turn (motorists already in the intersection when the lights turn red are not ticketed). A photo is taken of the car and its license plate and a ticket is generated and sent to the offender in the mail.

In Lakeland, cameras were installed June 1. Two women are tied for the lead in tickets received for running red lights with seven. Their fines total $1,500 each. The first two tickets are $125 each; subsequent tickets are $250 a piece.

The Lakeland Police Department says its objective is simple: reducing the traffic accidents caused by motorists running red lights.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, nearly two million crashes take place annually in intersections, with more than 144,000 injuries and nearly 900 fatalities caused by red-light-running in 2006.

More than a dozen Florida cities have installed the red-light cameras, including Temple Terrace. City officials there reported issuing over 10,800 citations for violations at just two intersections in the five months since the cameras were installed.

Cities across the nation using the cameras indicate the devices initially generate lots of tickets and revenue. Both decline over time as drivers become more familiar with the intersections that are equipped with cameras.
